I feel really good about this past week. I think everyone has been doing a great job with the mini-units and the literature pair shares. There have been some unique ideas for both that I might just have to borrow! I especially liked the art project that was included in one of the Gatsby unit plans (sorry, I can’t remember who did it! Michelle and Britney maybe?) That was a really creative way to begin a unit. It’s something I think the students would be engaged in and I would be interested to see their reactions to the project after they read the book. I would love to have the description of that project if possible!
I felt like my unit critique was very honest, but I was a little afraid it was too harsh. I didn't want Dr. English to think I don't like her! I feel a lot of the confusion I've been having is because I need more structure than Dr. English is used to giving. However, I am already seeing the changes she has made, so I feel like Unit 2 is going to be easier to follow!
My mini-lesson was on Friday, and I think it went very well! I had expected to be significantly more nervous up in front of the class, but I felt comfortable. As Dr. English mentioned, we have created a close classroom community, and I think this helped put me at ease. I am very thankful for everyone’s feedback on my lesson. The positive comments have given me more confidence in my ability to be a good teacher. The constructive criticism was also great because it will also help make me a better teacher. Several people asked about my timers, so I will embed the PowerPoint I got them from here! There are also instructions on YouTube, but they are fairly simple to use. You just have to make sure you copy ALL of the timer before you paste it into PowerPoint because the timers are made from several different pieces. In order to make sure you get them all just hold down the left button of your mouse and drag over the timer.
I guess I already mentioned my praise above—the art project from the Gatsby unit plan. I have a critique for myself (if that counts): I meant to explain the lenses in my micro-lessons and I forgot. A few people mentioned that in their feedback, so I apologize for not explaining. Finally, I have a question about the educational field experience handout Dr. English gave in class. One of the requirements is teaching for at least three hours, which I already plan on doing, but I was wondering how we would prove that we had done it. Should we get a note from our cooperating teacher?
